Riyaaz Patel, associate, shares his career story and his aspirations for Russell Bolton Consulting.
What was your first job?
An architectural practice in Brunei in the late 1990s, then qualified as a chartered building surveyor at Davis Langdon Everest in Liverpool during the first four years of the new millennium. Since 2003 I have worked in Manchester with EC Harris, Arcadis and until recently at Rider Levett Bucknall as a building surveyor / project manager progressing to an associate level.
What inspired you to work in the real estate sector?
The construction industry was always the number one choice for me but as a school leaver I was not sure where exactly I would finish up. Having experienced bricklaying, plumbing, architectural technician to then a building surveyor and a project manager, I have always stayed within the built environment sector where my passion lies.
What has been your career highlight?
I have been quite fortunate to work in the primary reserves of the Brunei forestry in my early years of my career, building timber visitors facilities. In 2013, I landed an opportunity with The University of Manchester to work on their graphene related schemes which were challenging high profile projects in Manchester.
What real estate project do you wish you had worked on?
I have been fortunate enough to have experienced a diverse sector range, with some high profile projects, but if there was one I would say the ‘Walkie Talkie’ building (20 Fenchurch Street, London) as it has a fantastic sky garden but also due to its controversy!
Who has been your biggest influence?
My father has always inspired me to work hard and he still drives a bus at the age of 68. More recently, Captain Sir Tom Moore has inspired me of his good nature and character and maintaining positivity.
What attracted you to Russell Bolton Consulting?
I find that we have many synergies in our leadership and management styles, which is half the battle in any organisation.
What is your role at the new firm?
I am an associate of the business, with a specific focus around project management. My role is to be an integral member of the client teams to help deliver a high level of service to achieve the best possible outcome for all of our commissions.
What gives you the greatest buzz in a project?
A collaborative team where we can collectively enjoy the journey of developing a project.
What are your ultimate goals for Russell Bolton Consulting?
I want to help the firm build a team of like-minded individuals; grow our client base and put the fun into working in a true family feel organisation.
